The Trump phenomenon's most revealing and distinctive occasions – not its most important, nor most brutal, nor most hazardous, nor stupidest, but potentially its most enlightening – came earlier this autumn. In the course of multiple weeks, the American president commenced revealing the public his plans for an ornate dance hall two times larger than the White House and then commenced unilaterally ripping down the East Wing to construct it.
He has committed acts 10,000 times as bad – the current estimate of fatalities resulting from his reductions to international aid stands at 600,000 and rising, and this week a study forecast his energy policies would cause deaths 1.3 million more. However nothing as distinctive. No former leader would have attempted – really, no other president would have contemplated – solo demolishing large sections of the presidential residence in order to erect a Versailles-style party room, with the direct cooperation of some of the richest Americans, the majority of whom maintain dealings with public institutions.
We went from 'the gentle will obtain the world' into 'the humble will perish from cholera'
As confusing as it is to observe the leader try to upend the old idea of democracy and exchange it with its direct contrary, there remains a substantial portion within America who wouldn't consider it totally unfamiliar. That is those of us – within elder demographics a near majority – who were raised within mainstream Protestant traditions.
We have observed throughout the years as rightwing evangelical churches transformed the Christ we grew up with into the total contrary of who we understood him to be. At its most basic, they transformed an image of love into an icon of animosity who approves specifically the brutality that he condemned in scripture; this has happened at a slower pace, over decades as opposed to months, yet it remains disconcerting via comparable methods, a disorienting gut punch for countless people.
A Damaging Christianity Takes Hold
So let me first describe the Jesus from my childhood, since in theory the Savior is the core of Christian religion, and because the rapidly expanding group within America could have minimal awareness regarding him because they identify as atheists or agnostics or spiritual independents. I take no issue with these different approaches, nor with alternative spiritual paths; but I do think that exist valuable insights of significant worth in biblical accounts.
It is unquestionably not the story of an authoritative monarch emerging; rather, an infant arrives to displaced parents in an automotive shelter, who must quickly flee to a different country to avoid undercover officers. The infant develops in simple surroundings, a working carpenter; his doctrine is about love for fellow humans, particularly for the impoverished – and not a sentimental love, but a concrete one, shown by providing food and protecting. Jesus' answer to aggression is to offer the opposite cheek – not as an act of submissive tolerance, but as a way to instruct the attacker; his crime policy states that when an individual takes your coat you should give the person your additional clothing as well.
The apparent and straightforward fact that the Savior in biblical accounts advocates for a kind of profound affection focused on the poor has consistently rendered the Christian faith something of a scandalous religion: appealing to the general public, but because of its intrinsic extremism needing to be contained. In the fifties it was controlled through watering down – The Protestant faith was so widespread that it essentially baptized the status quo.
A Struggle for the Best Within Us
Hence I have become encouraged to witness the steadfast resistance regarding Trump arise during the previous year. It has provided great solace to participate in developing the movement that has taken to the streets through repeated demonstrations, and appears to have motivated electorate to participate in numbers during minor elections. We will need to persist with it, and with identical determination, displaying national flags during all protests and appeals to the best parts of American history.
We're going to be asked ... about how you treated the foreigner? Did you welcome them and welcome him or not?
The nation is most protected, to put it differently, by reference to the best within national tradition, similar to Christianity is best defended by reference to that which renders it special and beautiful, specifically the model of Jesus. In neither case does it imply pretending the worst of both America and Christianity did not happen; it means both modesty and belief, a mixture that serious national faithful should be comfortable with.
